I am wondering if anyone has had any issues with breastfeeding while crossfitting. I am about to start back at my box (my baby is 4 weeks old now) and I have been reading online that too much exercise could cause problems with your milk production. I also read that repetitive arm movements could cause blocked milk ducts. Hopefully this is all rare. I am looking forward to getting back at it and wouldn't want any of these issues to come up :(

You can definitely do both, but you will really need to up your caloric intake. As long as you eat enough and drink plenty of water, it should not be a problem. I have never heard of anyone getting blocked ducts from a lot of arm movement, so I wouldn't be too concerned about that one. :)

I breastfed successfully while xfitting with only one incidence of mastitis, but that was because my child had a hulk appetite and I was not always great about cleaning up after he finished or after pumping.

Ditto on making sure you're drinking enough water. I personally found that by eating primal/paleo, my breast milk was very rich with good fat for the baby and he had very little gas/stomach problems. The only way to go in my opinion!

Aesthetically though... even with eating clean w/ a cheat 2x a week and xfitting 4 times a week, I didn't see good results until after breast feeding, which for me was one year. I just didn't get that really cut look again until then, BUT whatever! it's our babies! :-) Good luck to you!

I returned to crossfit while breastfeeding and didn't have any issues with milk supply. However, for the first 5 months of nursing I had an oversupply and did have to be careful working out. Before working out, especially before doing anything where I could get hit in the chest such as volleyball, my lactation consultant advised me to pump. I was prone to plugged milk ducts and had mastitis twice due to the oversupply so I was probably a special case. Any type of impact to the chest could cause swelling and result in a plugged duct. Overall, I was a lot more comfortable working out after nursing or pumping just due to a little less weight up top.

Until my daughter started eating more solids and dropped a nursing or two, I wasn't able to drop the last five pounds I had from pregnancy. I think this is probably similar to what xiefitness was saying about getting the really cut look again. My body seemed to hang onto those last few pounds as an emergency reserve of sorts. I didn't really mind much because I knew that nursing was more important than a six pack. Then when I finally was back in shape, well, I ended up getting pregnant again :)

Thanks for all the replies. I went back to my box 2 days ago and again today and all is great!! I pumped just before I went to class and then my baby fed after and she was fine - no issues with the milk supply at all. It feels so good to be back!
